Pleased to meet you. Interview #10 Sam Osborne

Its been a while since my last artist interview but finally here is installment number 10.

1. Please tell us your business name & where are you based?
My name and my business name is Sam Osborne and I am based near Oxford in the UK

2. What do you create and how would you describe your style?
I create my own ranges of prints, cards, gifts and homewares - everything from notebooks to bags and tea towels. My style is pretty varied but I love colour, pattern and type and most of my work features a combination of these. I work from hand drawn sketches and digitally created designs, often combining them to create depth and texture.

3. How did you get into making and do you make a living out of your creations?
After studying graphic design at university I worked as a graphic designer for various agencies - I loved it, creating print and branding for a huge range of companies but I missed the more hands on way of work that I'd enjoyed some much in my art education so in January 2011 I quit my full time job to start my own business. Along with some freelance design work I make my living out of my creations - something which I find very exciting!

4. What is your favorite piece of work or a favorite project you’ve worked on?
As with most designers my favourite project is the one I am working on right now - whatever that might be! At this moment in time I am working on some new designs for wrapping paper, wallpaper and fabric and am really enjoying that. Out of the products I have in store now then my favourite would have to be my Sexy Legs design - it's a brightly coloured collection of high heeled ladies legs and it just makes me smile!

5. If you could achieve any business goal with your work no matter how fantastical what would you most like to do?
At the moment the thought of walking down the high street and seeing my designs on products in shops is the fantasy that is keeping my going. If I'm allowed to be completely crazy then as a huge motorsport fan wrapping an F1 car in my prints would be incredible!

6. Do you have any tips for others who want to set up a creative crafty business?
Just do it. Sounds so simple but just take that first step, open at Etsy shop, book a craft fair, whatever it is. I need a bit of pressure to really get moving on things which is why quitting my job was the right way to go for me but there is no reason why you can't make a start in your spare time outside of work, keep it simple and focus on 1 thing and remember to have fun!
